| Mack the Knife - LKBV |
| Public |
|
( Test embed from Blip.tv )
This is the Lord King Bad Vid I made back in 2005 for sisabet's LKBV challenge. It actually did not show at the room party due to tech issues (neither the divx nor the xvid disk would play).
This was early days in the "what is LKBV" -- my inner 13 year old is all about musical theatre and vaudeville, so dance, landshark, dance!
It's completely ridiculous, and not really in the spirit of how LKBV later came to be defined, but it still makes me happy. I may be the only person who was glad to see the Land Shark return in comic-book form! Don't think that I haven't thought about making a title graphic for the vid using comic scans.
Embed is behind a cut because I'm not sure if blip.tv embeds autoplay, and also because the embed is pretty big.

| Grrr, imeem. |
| Public |
|
imeem is kicking off all user-uploaded video (and photos) on June 30th. They announced this yesterday.
I am really annoyed by this! Yes, there are other streaming video sites, especially NOW (youtube, blip.tv, BAM video vault, viddler, vimeo) -- but imeem was the one that the vidding community embraced -- and advertised! Hello, mentions in New York magazine, by Henry Jenkins, by Francesca Coppa, etc. And imeem, at the time we moved in, had better video quality than youtube, and
Not only are we losing the actual vids, we're losing the comments, the discussion pages, the community infrastructure -- now I have to refind and refriend 144 people, assuming that is even possible. Some vidders *only* have their vids up on imeem. There are tons and tons of playlists that vid-watchers have created, which are going to vanish.
Youtube has immensely increased their screening and auto-deletion / refusal to upload content, particularly starting in Jan/Feb this year. A bunch of homeless vidders from Youtube moved into imeem, and now they are homeless again.
I hate this. I hate that it's happening, I hate that we got four days notice. I don't even watch streaming video all that much, but I hate that a million links are suddenly going to be dead.
I'm so pissed that I edited the imeem wikipedia article. Four days is not enough time! ARGH!
The DownloadHelper extension for Firefox is one of the few will actually download content from imeem, fyi. It lets you save as flv, or download and convert to another format. More info in vidding.

| Vid Rec: We Have a Right To Be Angry by Stacia Yeapanis |
| Public |
|
So, this is interesting. (Mmmm, meta.) It's a call-to-arms to vidders (and people interested in Fair Use) in vid form, prompted by the recent mass-deletions by YouTube.
Hmm, okay, actually the vid was taken down by YouTube, so it was not made in response to the take-down, but is being reinterpreted in light of it. It's the reinterpretation that interests me.
Fandoms used are: Buffy, Xena, and Charmed. Using Charmed lets her set the vid up with a clip that is even more perfect for the reinterpretation. And I suspect that the excellent opening Warning, which is a parody of the Warnings present on commmercial DVDs, is new.
It's not technically flawless, but it has heart and feels genuinely angry and engaged. Linked via missdeviant. This is the text of the email that is circulating: ( Artists and non-professional creatives are being intimidated into giving up their right (yes, I believe it is a right) to Fair Use )
ETA: Editing this post to make it public made it disappear from my flist, I'm not sure if anyone saw this

| I <3 OTW + Firefox = Love |
| Public |
|
Since we are heading into holiday-shopping season, I thought I'd take a minute to promote the I ♥ OTW toolbar for Firefox. This extension adds the OTW referral code when you browse on amazon [.com, .co.uk, .ca] -- When you buy, the Amazon referral fee is donated to the OTW.
[And hey - the DVD of Dr. Horrible is an Amazon exclusive!]
More info about the widget here. It's an easy way to help out the Organization for Transformative Works, which has a lot of cool projects in development.
The wiki, Fanlore, is open beta and has a plural point of view policy. Rock! So far: 1,800 articles (with 22,300 edits!). o.O
The archive is in active development and at the beta stage (Rev. 953 of the code! open for browsing, uploading is restricted): for now it hosts fanfiction from 240 fandoms. Black Samvara's RPF story about the Archive (partially told in ALT text) is wacky fun, and shows that stories can include graphics. There's a bunch of cool stuff that you can do as a reader, and more fun features are on the way.
And then, there's the Academic Journal! The first issue of Transformative Works and Cultures was released in September. It is open-access, available on-line for free. And the fabulous Vidding Documentary that laurashapiro put together along with Francesca Coppa, MIT, and about 45 vidders. (Available to stream or download here -- start with What Is Vidding. There are six 3-minute sections.)
... and even more projects. Like Legal Assitance for fans! And Open Doors -- rescuing fannish projects from oblivion!
So, while OTW is happy to accept donations at any time, using the Firefox toolbar is another way to help out a good cause -- 'cause after all, we aim to own the goddamn servers.
